NBA Spurs Hire Becky Hammon as First Female Coach

The normally reticent Gregg Popovich offers little insight to basketball fans when interviewed on television between quarters of NBA basketball games.

However, yesterday the tight-lipped San Antonio Spurs coach’s historic move screamed loudly throughout the sports world, not just within NBA circles.

Popovich named former San Antonio Stars player Becky Hammon as a full-time assistant coach on his Spurs staff.

Fickle Miami Heat NBA Fans

Thankfully, last night’s Game 5 of the NBA Finals was played in San Antonio and not in Miami.

Otherwise, basketball fans would have witnessed another poor display of support for their home town team.

Based on their history, fickle Miami Heat fans would have called it quits even earlier this year than they did during Game 6 of last year’s NBA Finals. In 2013, they bailed on their team with 28 seconds to go in an elimination game with the Heat down by five points.

Ironically, many Heat ticket holders in attendance missed an epic, improbable comeback that saved the series for the Heat.

A miraculous turn of events allowed the team to repeat as champs when it beat the Spurs in Game 7 two nights later. The game was played in front of the same fans that inexplicably turned their backs on the team and bolted the American Airlines Arena 48 hours earlier.
