The most famous missed call in the history of World Cup soccer occurred on June 22, 1986 in front of 114,850 fans in Mexico City’s Estadia Azteca.
Known by the divinely inspired nickname the Hand of God, the controversial goal has never been forgotten and has been forever memorialized in sports blogs like these for the past 28 years.
During the 1986 World Cup quarter-final match-up between Argentina and England, Argentina’s Diego Maradona illegally punched a loose ball in the box into the back of the net. Maradona’s obvious handball goal should have been immediately disallowed by Tunisian referee Ali Bin Nasser. However, the goal stood and eliminated an angry English team from further competition in the tournament. Continue reading
